Smart Roads

Smart Roads: Smart mobility ensures a safer, inclusive infrastructure for pedestrians, cyclists and differently abled. It promotes Eco-mobility with well-designed road sections which will facilitate uninterrupted pedestrian flow, dedicated bicycle tracks, efficient public transport facilities. It also helps in reducing commute time, travel distance, accident rate, noise & air pollution.

  1. Non-Motorized Transport Facilities: Indian roads have been planned and used for motorized vehicles; Motorists seldom give way for the Non-Motorized Transport (NMT) users creating safety issues for the latter. These non-motorized vehicles are environment friendly and cost efficient which is why pedestrian zones, cycle tracks etc. have been very successful concepts across several cities globally. Hence, NMT is an integral part of any urban settlement which is moving towards sustainable development. NMT corridors ensure safety, accessibility (for differently abled. elderly etc) and user friendly infrastructure without obstructions. Additionally, they will be accessible from any part of the road, through a combination of zebra crossings. About 50 km of ABD roads will be redesigned / retrofitted to achieve the above objective in the ABD area. Implementation of NMT will lead to improvement in air quality and will also reduce noise levels. Redesigning of about 3.0km of streets with RoW > 30 m, will ensure adequate space for NMT lane, utility corridors; bus bays and carriage ways are created ensuring a sustainable mobile ecosystem.
  2. Smart Bus Stops: Bus stops form an integral part of any public transport system i.e. Buses. Functionally bus stops should act as a primary source of information for passengers, apart from serving as waiting points. Hence, Smart bus stops have two primary objectives: firstly, making the wait comfortable/less arduous for citizens and secondly ensuring complete availability of information at the bus stop. Improving the infrastructure of bus stops can make them accessible, comfortable and user-friendly for the differently abled. Also, equipping bus stops with Passenger Information System (PIS) to update bus arrivals in real time will be a big stride towards promoting Public transportation system.
  3. Junction Improvement: Upgrading of fourteen junctions in the ABD area has been planned to improve the traffic management system in the city. Intelligently designed junctions reduce congestion by facilitating easy traffic flow. The junctions will also be made pedestrian and NMT friendly to ensure safety of the commuters. Additionally, it aims at providing a face-lift to the junctions by improving the aesthetical aspects.
